Max grew up on the New Mexico/Arizona border his father was a miner who later opened up a little gas station out on the new roads that crossed some of the most extreme conditions on its way to California. Young Max helped his often drunk widower father with the station and little repair garage to help travelers make the difficult trek. He also learned survival and tracking camping out in the high deserts nearby.
William Lambert, a distant neighbor of the Hardcastles’ was a rancher and pilot who became a surrogate father to the Teenaged Max. He was a former World War I fighter ace who moved far from anything that reminded him of the Great War. He taught the boy how to fly and shoot and much about life.
Lambert died shortly before the Hardcastle gas station went under. At age 16, Max left his father who regularly beat him at this point and threaten to kill him. Max stole Lambert’s old airplane and headed to Central and South America.
While his South America, Max was self employed as a pilot. He soon turned to mercenary work after becoming involved with various revolutionary factions. While working as a mercenary fighter pilot, he met his first love. A young gaucho woman named Esmeralda hired him to fly to her to a several secret locations to deliver important information the current revolutionaries. He was drinking from his tin cup ignoring her as she was speaking to him about what she thought was import navigational matters hen she drew her pistol and put a bullet straight through it.
While flying the two fell in love despite the hatred for each other. Max tried to convince Esmeralda to fly away from the war and strife of her home with him, but she refused out of a sense of duty to her people. That would be the last time Max would see her as she was assassinated with revolutionary leader Emiliano Zapata. All Max has to remind himself of her his his tin cup with the bullet hole in it.
He fled north back to the United States after his plane was shot down and he was left for dead. Having no prospects, he joined the Army Air Corp and entered the pilot training program after falsifying a college diploma. One week before completely flight school, Max’s deception was discovered by a rival pilot, Beck Whitey, who despite his family’s riches and hundreds flight hours was by most accounts a lesser fighter pilot than Max. Max was nearly sent to Leavenworth for his crime until James Wrath reviewed his files and transferred him to the Bureau of Arcane Defense as a fully qualified pilot.
